KINYANA - Burundi 2018 Verified listing

Kinyana was constructed in the year 1991 to be operated as an emergency station in the event the neighbouring washing stations of Nkaka and Rugori were at full capacity and the cherries of the region’s farmers needed somewhere to be purchased and processed. Thankfully, this is no longer the case and Kinyana washing station has been in full use year after year. The name Kinyana itself is shared by the hill and originates from the word “inyana” which is Kirundi for a newborn cow. In fact, this area was thoroughly enjoyed by the vast herds of cattle who came from far and wide with their herders to enjoy the luscious and nutritious grasses. The sub-hill of Tubindi which is the location of the station is named so after a pot known to the locals as utubindi which the people made and used for consumption of a home-brewed beer known as “impeke”.
