Description

Hello, I am Carolina Torres Cortés, current family representative of the family and owner of the Arroyo Triste or Sad creek farm. We are a large family consisting of my mother, many sisters women and a male brother increased by the husbands of my sisters already married and my nephews. I am the oldest of the unmarried daughters and my sisters single minors are studying in different school grades. The farm was started by my grandfather in 1945 when among several relatives obtained land granted by the municipality of Santa Catarina, Juquila in Oaxaca state and everyone decided to use them for growing coffee. My father, with a lot of effort and work, was able to acquire his own land, which was enough for my father to start growing coffee and thus improve family development and thus give all the brothers the opportunity to study a profession.
In 1980, Eng. Diego Woolrich invited all the producers of the community to organize themselves to be able to export the coffee and those who wanted joined the Local Agricultural Association of Coffee Producers of Santos Reyes Nopala (AAL), with producers from Nopala, Juquila and Lachao in which my grandfather, my father and my uncles had an active participation. In the year 1998 the AAL became the Cooperative of Coffee Producers Marketing and Various Services Santos Reyes Nopala, S.C. of R.L in the which my father was also an active member occupying different manager positions within it. In 1994, Coffee Rust devastated the region with great virulence, affecting to all the plantations and varieties of coffee that we had cultivated to such degree that the plants that remained alive stopped producing, having had harvests of up to 10% of what was collected in previous years.
From that moment on, my father devoted himself, along with all of us, to replant with new varieties those that are now producing coffee that we are currently selling. My father, Avelino Torres Cortés, passed away in 2019 and although my mother, Esperanza Cortés Silva is the axis of the family, I stayed as representative of the family and I am the one who organizes work and commercial activities, although they are still on a small scale. Now, with the participation in the Cup of Excellence Mexico 2022, a contest where our coffee obtained the 21st place, we see that we have always been producers of quality coffee and that fills us with enthusiasm to continue participating. It's the fourth time we participated in the Cup of Excellence, this being the first time that our
coffee is among the 30 best coffees in Mexico. I thank the organizers of the contest for holding these events that exalt Mexican coffee by making known to the whole world our quality, the quality of coffee from Juquila, the quality of coffee from Mexico and my participation will serve as an example so that more and more producers participate in coffee quality events to obtain prices that pay off and improve the quality of life of the coffee field because it is, as Ing. Diego Woolrich, the future of the producers is to produce coffee of specialty. In our farm we have varietals
