Description
The "Las Barrancas" farm is located in the community of Cuapan, Huitzilan de Serdán, Puebla. Coffee is cultivated and processed by the Cortés Aco family. It is situated at an altitude of approximately 1160 meters above sea level. Its dimensions are 3 and a half hectares, with only 2 hectares planted with coffee, while the rest is forest native to the region with oak, pine, and ayakouite trees. The name "Las Barrancas" derives from being surrounded by three river streams that provide moisture to the land throughout the year. The coffee variety is entirely Marsellesa, with the 2023-2024 harvest being its sixth year of production. Fruit trees such as oranges, bananas, guavas, and sugarcane are found within the coffee plantation. Harvest months are from December to March, with selective cutting of ripe coffee beans. We have two certifications: Café Practices and Fair Trade, which have taught us to be environmentally friendly by protecting trees, land, and waterways. The small farm is part of the family heritage of Osiel Cortés, who not only left me the land but also instilled in me the love for planting and harvesting coffee. I am very grateful that he taught me this noble work and that I can pass it on to the next generation in the same way. Participating in the Cup of Excellence is satisfying, as it has been Osiel Cortés's third year participating, accumulating a wealth of experiences with specialty coffees. As a producer, Osiel Cortés is convinced that to receive fair payment for our coffee beans, it is necessary to carry out procedures to high quality standards, from selective cutting to proper fermentation time and drying on screens.
