Description

#9 La Bandera
Diego Hidalgo Umana
La Bandera farm was acquired by a purchase that my great-great-grandfather had made almost 200 years ago; then over the years, it was inherited to us who are the second generation producing coffee, when we were little in the summer time; and besides that it was a duty to help my father to pick coffee, with the savings made we helped him with the needs of the house, in addition to earning money to buy school supplies. For many years, 30% of the farm was cultivated with the typical variety, but over the years we planted different varieties, so different micro-lots were created within the same farm, and one of them is the Geisha variety. We have our own nursery; therefore, year after year we are going to improve the quality of each plantation. At the mill, all family members are very concerned about quality control, some work in the pulping area and others in the drying area. The coffee harvest is done by workers, who come from Panama; therefore, part of the quality of our farms is due to the harvesting of the coffee made by them. This batch has the particularity that the sunlight arrives from very early in the morning and practically all day until dark, which helps a lot, to make the coffee ripen 100% perfectly; It also, has fruit trees that provide shade for the workers during the harvest time and in the winter time, they help us to prevent the erosion of the land, because it is very steep and besides that it is located in the highlands of Los Santos. This is the third harvest of the geisha variety, which catapulted us, to be in the Top Ten of Cup of Excellence Costa Rica 2022, we are very happy and grateful. We hope to continue producing one of the best coffees in Costa Rica.
