Description

Overview

San Carlos in located at Canton “Potrero Grande Arriba”, home of many famous coffees from El Salvador , almost reaching the top of the Santa Ana Volcano, San Carlos farm enjoys a breath-taking view, climate, rainfall and the care of her owner. This farm is owned by Amadeo Riera y Solsona, a renowned doctor but nowadays, is managed by his son, Jaime Riera who is a gastroenterologist and also a coffee producer. Jaime really likes to try new thing on this farm, he is now trying different methods of pruning to improve their production and also he is looking to revitalize the farm. Some other cultural practices they develop at the farm besides the continuous pruning of the coffee and shade trees are weed control and farm replanting, all this work using the traditional methods. They have 3,200 coffee trees per hectare and technified shade. Also, because of the high altitude in which San Carlos is located the farm ripens slowly. Jaime thinks the reason why this farm was awarded this year is the excellent quality of the Bourbón variety, also its altitude and location. He is highly motivated to keep up with the optimum harvest and sorting processes to improve the quality each year. He thinks the key to this is motivating the people that work the farm, teaching them the importance of their role, and improving the benefits for everyone involved, he also pays them 40% above the legal wage for harvest. For example, Jaime is very proud of his foreman, Francisco Recinos, one of the most empowered and enthusiastic “mandador” we have ever seen. He is highly motivated and has supervised flawlessly every task on the farm.
