Description

Rancho La Sirena (The Mermaid) is located in Pluma Hidalgo, Oaxaca and it has been owned by the Cruz family for 3 generations.  I have 8 brothers who have been inheriting portions of the Finca. My kids were born here but none of them are in the Finca because they have its own works outside the town. My father bought the Finca in 1970 and the first coffee plants where planted the next years. The production took many years. At the beginning of the 80’s we begun to have our first real harvest with 20-25 quintals per hectare. At the end of the 90’s the production fall down terribly due to the Paulina’s hurricane that destroyed great part of Pluma Hidalgo’s Ecosystem. Those years there were also a price crisis and living here was very difficult. I had to migrate to the United States for some years. That time was very difficult, I had to work a lot for paying my debts and feed my family from the distance because my children were studying in the city of Oaxaca. But that season ended and I was able to come back to my land and to work for have the Rancho productive again. Two years ago, our house was burned and we lost our place to live, our patrimony, our working tools, everything. With the help of my wife we began again and in 2013 I participated in Cup of Excellence were I got the 14th place. This year I climbed positions and won the 4th place with 89.60 points. Being on the top of the coffees from my country makes me feel very proud and gives me energy for working more and more.

For me it is very important to know that my coffee has quality and that I can go this far
