El Porvenir belonged to Israel Rodriguez, grandfather of Gloria, and then inherited by Jose Maria Rodriguez, her father, in 1946. Since that time, it was partially grown to Bourbón and later it was all 100% Bourbón. This 5.6 hectare farm is located very close to the Apaneca town. Two families live permanently on the farm and 6 more people complete the permanent workforce for El Porvenir. Gloria is really proud of being able to continue her father’s legacy in coffee, and dedicates this award to him since he endured a tremendous amount of effort and dedication to coffee growing even during tough times. She is committed to keep this farm evolving so that it becomes a source of employment in the area, keeping an environmentally friendly approach to cultural practices as well. This year was the first time entering coffee from El Porvenir to the Cup of Excellence, last year, Gloria ranked 10th place with San Jose farm. Gloria believes her coffee is blessed by the good growing conditions and inherent characteristics and attitudes from her workers, such as: 100% Bourbón, deep soils, adequate rainfall pattern, handpicking of only ripe cherries, and the way that people that performed cultural practices and harvesting identify with goals pursued by her. All this are key to achieve great quality in the cup. She supervises harvesting activities and makes sure pickers get additional wages for a job well performed. Gloria hopes that this event allows her to continue improving cultural practices, as well as workers and their family’s welfare while keeping the farm environmentally sustainable. For Gloria, producing truly specialty coffees is one great example of a win-win situation, since it means better conditions for the farm, the grower, the miller, the workers and the country overall. She is very grateful to god, for giving her the opportunity to have had her farm won such prestigious award. She is also very thankful to the organizers for promoting these events, to national and international cuppers, and to the Salvadoran Coffee Council staff, for a great job to keep turning coffee growing in El Salvador into a successful activity.
