The El Cedral farm is located in the El Cedral community, municipality Las Vegas in the Department of de Santa Barbara. It has an altitude of 1600 meters above sea level and is 10 km away from Las Vegas community, in Santa Barbara. What is your farm’s history? Is your farm a family unit? How long has it belonged to your family? How many members make up your family? I own the property since 1985 which I inherited from my father Mr. Pedro Moreno who taught me how to grow coffee and the family is made up of 4 members, two sons who are 10 and 12 years old.
How many persons work in your farm, family members, permanent employees and temporary employees? I have 2 permanent employees and 20 temporary workers for the coffee harvest.
What natural resources conservation practices do you follow in the farm? 1 – I plant coffee in contour to prevent soil erosion.
2 – I use 25% shade.
3- Good management of the pulp and coffee wastewater.
What is the shade percentage and the varieties found in your farm? The shade is managed at 25% due to the farm’s altitude of 1,600 meters above sea level, it doesn’t need a lot of shade.
What type of fertilization process do you use in your farm? I use granulated chemical fertilizer 12-42-12 and urea once a year in July, 3 ounces of per plant.
What type of management do you use in your farm (traditional, semi-technical, technical?)The management of the farm is semi-technical with small quantities of agrochemical fertilizers in the soil and foliage since there are few plagues and diseases, and the soil is very fertile. Are you part of an association or cooperative? No. What is the secret for winning this competition (describe the preparation process of the competing lot)?1 –Good agro-climatic conditions in the farm’s location. 2- Good practices for the picking, milling and drying process of the coffee.
How does it feel to be a winner of the Cup of ExcellenceHappy and satisfied because I get the opportunity to sell my coffee at a higher price.
Who prepares your coffee for exportation? (Explain how you sell it and to whom)It is prepared at the “San Vicente” Exporter in the Pena Blanca community, in Santa Cruz de Yojoa, Cortes.
What is your opinion of the Cup of Excellence? It is the best event from IHCAFE. What has been your experience in the Cup of Excellence? I have participated for 3 consecutive years from 2009 to 2012, and every year I have made it to the national competition, the online auction and this year seventh place.
