History of the farm
João Batista dos Santos is a small producer. He is married to Meres Gomes do Prado and has three children, Lucas do Prado Santo, Marcos Prado do Prado Santo and Maria do Prado Santo.
Sítio São João Esta is located in the Serra do Brigadeiro mountain range in Araponga, MG. The farm measures a total of 18 hectares, with about 7 hectares of native forest where several species of animals and birds live and there are fruit, medicinal and ornamental plants. And there are 11 hectares of fields of coffee, corn, beans, ornamental plants, where animals and birds live off the fruits on the farm, which sustain the family.
Sítio São João is 7 km from the city of Araponga, MG, and 270 from the state capital, Belo Horizonte.
The farm is part of the lands that the producer’s father acquired from his own father more than 50 years ago. João acquired the small area from his father in 2003. However, he worked on the farm from 1982 to 2003 as a sharecropper with his father. In 2003 he became owner of the lands, where he, his wife and three children (26, 24 and 21) live and work.
Coffee processing system
=The entire harvest and drying process is done on the farm by the family. They always respect the environment, seeking not to damage it in any way. The production does not use any pesticides. They use chemical fertilizers and organic manure.
The family has a small structure for the drying process with a concrete patio and African beds. There is also a warehouse for final processing and preparation for sale.
Concern about quality
Around 10 years ago, João sought knowledge through courses and conversations with other producers in order to produce differentiated coffees with the goal of obtaining a high-quality product and improving the family’s income. He is a producer who is full of hope and will not give up fighting. He is always in search of improvement and knowledge.
