Dawencho G/H/D Bunna Amrach is a coffee farmers’ union with 116 members. The union was established in early 2021, in Dawancho kebele, Arbegona woreda in Arbe Guna zone of the Sidama region. At an altitude of 2300 meters above sea level, its member farmers plant coffee and apply organic farming practices. The union has now collected 60,000 kilograms of coffee and processed it into natural coffee sun-dried on raised beds with mesh wire. The union sold its coffee to local markets in Addis Ababa and Hawassa.
Mulugeta Muntasha, representative of the union stated that they are extremely pleased by the result which happened within the year of the establishment of the union. Mulugeta said, “Dawencho is a newly established union which was having financial difficulties and had approached my company, Mulugeta Muntasha Bale. We signed a one-year contract to work in partnership. So, I am extremely happy to have won such an award and it is a great encouragement for me and the union. Nigussie Gemeda was the winner last year. Inspired by his work, we worked harder and produced better quality coffee than him. So, the competition and the high result has now inspired us to do much better and most importantly, we are now guaranteed strong international market linkage which we hope will solve our financial challenges, so long as we continue producing quality coffee.”
