Description
The ranch is located in the municipality of La Independencia, in the state of Chiapas, and borders the localities of San Rafael, San Antonio Porvenir, Santa Rita, among others. It was acquired in the 1980s with an area of 60 hectares. Josefina López Ruiz's father-in-law, Roque Alfonso, planted coffee on an initial area of 6 hectares. Initially, Typica, Bourbon, Mondonovo, and Caturra varieties were planted. However, after the attack of coffee rust in the region, they replanted with new varieties completely unknown to them, such as Pache seed, from a neighboring country, and other varieties like Geisha and Oro Azteca. Each variety was planted in batches and given conventional management, with manual cleaning and sometimes machinery, fertilization, and timely cultural practices. In 2015, Josefina and her husband decided to work the plot independently. Since then, they have been working as a family, as it is not a large area. In 2020 or 2021, they were invited to courses on processes such as natural, honey, among others, to improve the quality of their coffee and also to participate in the Cup of Excellence competitions. Since then, they have been participating.
Given that the plantations they inherited were unproductive, the family decided to replant in 2021, removing all the old plants and replanting with the same variety. This year, they are in full production with new plantations in half of their plot. Therefore, they continue to participate in competitions and have the necessary volume to continue working in coffee production. The wet mill is located in the city of Comitán de Domínguez, Chiapas, where the processes and drying of the coffee are carried out.
