Description

Overview

Altamira I, has been in the Batres family since 2002. One of the main virtues of this farm is its near location to Ahuachapan city, only 8 kilometers away from the city downtown. The farm is certified organic, and holds the Rain Forest Alliance certification. The cool climate and the volcanic soil of these plantations located at the Apaneca-Ilamatepec mountain range combine to produce large bold beans with a warm exotic fruitiness overlaying a crystal clear rich acidity. Fed by generous tropical rains and nurtured by a rare and ancient Mayan soil , the mild coffees of Altamira boast a fragrant aroma and pleasant aftertaste. Marco claims the reason for the unique flavors of the Pacamara from Altamira I to be the processing with the thermal spring waters, rich in potassium from the Santa Teresa mill, also property of the Batres Family. This mill won the 2003 National Environmental Award in the Category of Entrepreneurial Efforts for the use of Geothermal Energy and the 2006 Central America Award to Environmental Innovation. Organic practices are performed on this farm, organic fertilization is done 5 times plus the usage of coffee pulp. Weed control is performed strictly by hand, and Izote barriers are used to control erosion. Harvest time happened in December 2008. Medical care and salaries above the industry standard are offered to their workers. The family also helps sustain a school located at 500 meters from the farm.
