Description

Overview

Buenos Aires farm is located in the Canton Montenegro, Caserio El Pinar, close to the Trifinio national park that shares borders with Guatemala and Honduras . Pruning, weeding control is done under traditional methods and fertilization is based on soil analysis. Buenos Aires employs nearly 200 people for harvest and around 40 permanent employments throughout the year. Calera is a family owned business established by Juan Ramon Calderon, who started the farm 45 years ago, nowadays, the Valiente family keeps it with some of the same genetic material from Bourbón and Typica varieties. The Pacamara cultivar was planted in the 80’s, as a trial area, in order to observe its adaptability and productivity. The winning lot comes from Tablon Vista Hermosa 3, and only perfectly ripe coffees were harvest during January, it was process very quickly to avoid problems. They believe that all the quality controls strengthen the production process allowing them to obtain optimum quality and preserve intrinsic quality of these marvelous cherries. As winners from this event, they believe they have a great opportunity to position their region and their farm as a producer of exceptional quality. Calera, S.A. de C.V. owns San Miguel Ingenio mill, located in the same area, where they process their coffee, thus benefiting 25 people with jobs during harvest. This lot was particularly semi-washed based on a recommendation from a quality consultant. The Valiente family has been always interested in new ideas and practices that can bring out a better cup, and one of their hopes is to develop a progressive farm model. The Valiente family provides free land to their workers for growing cash crops such as corn, beans and vegetables. A local school was built on a land donated by the family, as well as a church and a health clinic. They also have helped to get support from several projects like NGO’s FORTAS/FUSADES, FUNDACESSA and the Japanese Cooperation (JICA) for developing programs in the community.
