Description

History of the farm:

Sítio São Bento dos Tachos, owned by Morvan Rabêlo de Rezende, is located in the municipality of Varginha, in the south of Minas Gerais, in the regional called “tachos,” approximately 15 km from the city center. The coffee crops, of the Arabica species, varieties yellow Bourbón, yellow catucaí, acaiá, and mundo novo, were planted at the highest parts of the property, between 950 and 1100 meters of elevation, on plots called “arable land,” and are surrounded by native forests filled with centenary trees, among them jacarandás, ipês, jatobás, pear and plum trees, the high-elevation tropical climate, propitious for producing specialty coffees, is in force.

The aforementioned rural property integrated FazendaBela Vista dos Tachos, which belongs to the owner’s father, Morvan Aloysio Acayaba de Rezende. Fazenda Bela Vista dos Tachos, in turn, belonged to the producer’s grandfather, Emílio Rezende Filho and to his great-grandfather, Cel. Emílio Justiniano de Rezende Silva, who introduced coff cultivation in his farms located in the Tachos region, among them the headquarters, Fazenda dos Tachos.

The Tachos micro-region has produced specialty coffees for more than a century. In the “Sul de Minas, excel ênciaem café” project, authored by the Agricultural Engineer and last head of the IBC Regional Agency, Antônio José Ernesto Coelho – Alba Edições, 2012 –the author transcribes a passage in the Album of Varginha, made by Luiz J. A. Rubião at the beginning of the 20th century, containing the following reference: “The coffee produced by Fazenda dos Tachos, an annual average of 16,000 arrobas (512,000 lbs), is of excellent quality, achieving an average of type 5. It is noteworthy that, in the Genova market, there is a type of coffee exported by Fazenda dos Tachos known as *Emílio* coffee that is well-priced due to its excellent quality.”

Concern about quality:

Cultivation is done in accordance with the recommendations of an Agricultural Engineer specializing in coffee. All pesticides used are recorded for the coffee crop. Pests and diseases are monitored to check for the need to control them. The pesticide application equipment is calibrated. Plant nutrition is based on soil analysis and on average productivity. All employees are registered. Environmental legislation is followed.
