Description

Trapiá is situated in the city of Baependi, in the Sul de Minas, in the region with the “Mantiqueira de Minas” Geographical Indication.

After more than 30 years of urban professional experience in Rio de Janeiro, Andrea and her husband, Renato, decided to start a new professional life experience. They acquired the property in September 2005, at the time with its current area: 384 hectares. They obtained UTZ certification in 2013. More than 50% of the farm’s area is preserved – native forests and fenced fields – having 30% as legal reserve. Only 40 hectares are planted with coffee. More than 60,000 plathymenia, a native tree, are planted in the fenced fields and we have a management plan for natural regeneration of the tree. The farm has several springs and waterfalls, enormous natural beauty.

The first activities undertaken upon assuming control of the farm were: reducing cattle breeding, suspending burning of fields for use as pastures, and planning to plant coffee, in addition to preparing dwelling infrastructure – reforming the home/ headquarters, constructing two chalets for visitors and renovating worker housing, with installation of a wood stove with a coil for water heating and a septic tank.

In the first years investments were made in planning new areas of coffees – increasing from 4 hectares (20,000 trees) to 40 hectares (110,000 trees) and in infrastructure: concrete and asphalt patios for drying the coffee, a washer, a pulper, rotating dryers, processing machinery and wooden granaries, resurfacing the public road that goes through the farm, renovated the electrical network and the water supply. The most important, however, was assembling the team. In addition to the four living on the farm, the rest live in a nearby neighborhood, 6 km away, and commute daily in our

Kombi, which spends the night in their neighborhood. Our team has low turnover, all of them being paid above the minimum salary.

In the area around the headquarters, there is a garden, a chicken pen and an orchard, all without commercial ends, in addition to beehives for honey. The remaining cattle serve to supply milk for residents, mainly for cheese making.

Coffee processing system:

  • Manual and mechanical harvesting.
  • Pulping of ripe and green coffee cherries.
  • Drying on patios and in a dryer.
  • Rest and storage in wooden granaries.
