Description
History of the farm
The history of coffee at Fazenda Nascentes da Grama begins together with the founding of the city of São Sebastião da Grama. The name of the farm comes from the large number of birds that came to the banks of the Anhumas Stream to drink its crystalline waters.
Around 1870, families from Minas Gerais settled in the city, bringing with them coffee seedlings to plant. These trees adapted very well due to countless positive factors. Following the end of slavery in 1888, immigrants, mostly Italians, began to arrive to provide labor. Among these immigrants were members of the Mapelli family, from the north of Italy and well-versed in agricultural work.
Favored with excellent climate, rich, volcanic soil, springs of crystalline waters and elevations ranging from 1000 to 1350 meters, the Mapelli family acquired a farm in 1953 to produce its own beans and named it Anhumas.
Together with his children, Augusto Mapelli worked hard in the fields. His wife contributed to the family’s income by sewing while their daughters helped with household chores.
All refuse generated by the farm is disposed of properly. The farm uses the “Sistema Bieobed Brasil,” which is the final disposal of effluent contaminated with pesticides; all sewage is treated with a septic tank; and all springs are isolated, always preserving the environment.
Today, more than a century and a half since the arrival of the first colonists, descendants of the third generation of the Mapelli family continue to produce coffee, prioritizing the artisan ways, which incorporates everything from “soil to cup” and the very high quality of the beans. This has led to the family achieving important awards at the state and national levels and, more importantly, carrying on the work of their ancestors.
