Moritas Vista Real - Guatemala 2021

Don Higinio Gómez and his wife, Doña Aura de Gómez were
among the first visionary farmers to transition into coffee over forty years ago.
in 1988, when they established their first coffee farm from the savings they earned growing tomatoes. They started their farm with about an acre of land in a place called Las Moritas.
Nowadays, they have grown a farm that covers many hectares dedicated to coffee and the remaining hectares are dedicated to native forest and agro-forestry crops like avocado, nispero, oranges, tangerine and other national fruits. The farm has formed a thriving coffee community where many low-income families have settled to work.
Moritas Vista Real is a farm located in San Antonio La Paz in the department of El Progreso in Guatemala. This is the highest non volcanic chain of mountains in Guatemala outside of the Huehuetenango Region. Finca Las Moritas boasts beautiful hectares of growing area at a high altitude of between 1700 and 1900 metres above sea level. With excellent clay soil and a microclimate of dense humid forests of pine, cujes and other diverse trees that gives character to the coffee produced there.

Moritas Vista Real has different lots, where produces several varietals of coffee, including Bourbon, Pache San Ramon, Castillo, Pacamara, and Red Bourbon.

One of the lot that you’re seen in this competition is the lot of “El Barranco”, with a Pacamara Varietal. This lot have an inclination that provides a great microclimate for the Pacamara, this area is like a high alpine with many blackberry trees.

Don Higinio has the vision to keep improving the quality of his product and since few years back he has been implemented new technologies and new processes to his coffee lands. He has already prepared adding drip irrigation system on his coffee lands on a dry season, this type of micro-irrigation system has the potential to save water and nutrients by allowing water to drip slowly to roots of plants from above the soil surface which makes healthy plants in order to produce a premium product. organic fertilizer is applied to plants in order to help them to recover.
