Description
Brief history of the production unit:
Finca San Rafael, located in the village of Hoja Blanca in the municipality of Cuilco, Huehuetenango, Guatemala, is an outstanding example of family legacy and excellence in coffee production.
The history of this estate begins in the 1950s with Eleodoro Villatoro, who, after encountering challenges growing corn on flood prone land, decided to move to Hoja Blanca. There, he began cultivating coffee, laying the foundation for a coffee growing tradition that endures to this day.
Over time, the farm was passed down to his daughter, Virgilia Villatoro, and her husband Javier Martinez. They nurtured the estate and eventually handed it over to their son Gerson Martinez. After completing studies in automotive mechanics, he took over responsibility for the farm in the 2000s. Although he was one of five siblings, he was the only one who showed interest in continuing the family's coffee legacy .
In 2019, Don Gerson participated in the Cup of Excellence competition, earning 19th place with a washed anaerobic Gesha coffee. This recognition fueled his passion for specialty coffee and enabled him to obtain an export license, facilitating direct marketing of his product.
