Semira is a 28 years old mother of one child. She has been working as a coffee supplier for the last two years. She works with over 20 farmers who grow the 74112 variety coffee and she collects 62,000 kilograms from an estimated total of 40 hectares of land found in Birbis Kela kebele, YirgaCheffee woreda, Gedeo zone, SNNP region. Semira says she supplies only specialty coffee which she processes as natural dry and mostly sells to the Ethiopian Commodity Exchange and a smaller quantity to exporters. She says that it is very difficult to get a fair price that can sufficiently cover the extensive labor of the farmers and still profit. She hopes the Cup of Excellence competition will create more access to a market with better prices. “I have submitted a sample for the second time this year. I am happy with the results and the upcoming auction” she said.
