Description
Alongside the reforestation of Doi Tung, the cultivation of cash crops became the community's first step toward a new livelihood.
Under the Doi Tung Development Project, villagers were given ownership of the coffee trees they planted. Better care meant higher quality yields, which directly translated to higher income. This sense of ownership inspired everyone to pour their hearts into their work and maximize their potential, leading many to eventually become coffee entrepreneurs. Macadamia was also introduced as another valuable cash crop. These high-priced nuts can be transformed into a wide range of premium products. Because macadamia trees live for decades, with good care, they act like a family friend that grows right alongside the children. Today, moving toward specialty varieties and upscaling production is how the community is sustainably adapting to modern climate change.
