Description

Finca San José, once part of the historic Hacienda La Orduña in Coatepec, Veracruz, traces its roots back to the early 20th century. In the 1950s, the Martínez family—our great-grandparents and grandparents—acquired a small portion of the original estate. At the time, the primary agricultural activity was citrus cultivation. However, given the family’s experience with coffee farming in the region, several coffee varieties were gradually introduced on the land, including Typica, Bourbon, and Garnica.

After 2010, coffee production across Coatepec declined significantly due to the widespread impact of coffee leaf rust (roya) and coffee borer beetle (broca). Finca San José was not spared. Determined to restore the farm’s productivity, the third generation of the Martínez family took on the challenge in 2019. We introduced three new, resilient varieties: Anacafé 14, Obata, and the hybrid Mundo Maya (H16).

Thanks to these efforts, we have successfully produced five microlots to date, specifically for the Asian specialty coffee market.

In 2024, we implemented a sustainable and precise agronomic plan. Granular fertilizer was applied twice—once in June and again in November. For pest and disease control, we used monthly trapping and foliar applications from April through October. This integrated approach led to very low incidences of rust and borer infestations during the year.

Harvesting began in late December 2024 and continued with selective pickings through January and February 2025. From this harvest, we selected six tons of cherries for processing at the Escuela de Tueste Café. The coffee was then stored in Ecotack hermetic bags in our family-owned warehouse to preserve its freshness and quality.

Finca San José represents a living legacy—a revived land, cultivated with care and vision by new generations, committed to producing high-quality coffee with respect for our environment and heritage. Our goal is not just to grow exceptional coffee, but to preserve a way of life, and to share the taste of Coatepec with the world.
